Chiropractor and attorney surfing in Costa Rica

What is it about growing older that has people give up too soon or not try at all?  Fear of failure?  Fear of injury?   Fear of looking silly, stupid, or ridiculous?  Thoughts of “I don’t do that” or “I can’t do that” seems more prevalent after 35.    I’ve noticed that professional adults seem to have the most trouble trying new things,  generally.  Maybe because they are seen as authorities and want a success right away.   They are perceived as being accomplished.

I have tried many things and failed and tried again only to succeed  (at least a little).  This picture is one of my small successes.

In Costa Rica we took surfing lessons.  For two hours I paddled out and NEVER ONCE stood up on my board.  I fell EVERY TIME for two hours.  I remember sitting on the beach afterwards feeling so dejected.  I considered myself fit and coordinated.  I could workout on a BOSU.  Most physical activities I could handle.  I was almost in tears.

The next morning I woke and thought I’d give it another try.  The surf instructor, RUDI, was excited to give me another lesson.  He was very encouraging.  After 15 minutes I was surfing!!! It was so exciting and personally rewarding for me.  I was so happy that I didn’t give up!

So remember to “give it a go” next time something peaks your interest and your brain says “no” but your heart says “yes”.
